I had to find Eric. I just had to. Eric was my vampire brother. He bit me. If it wasn’t for him, I would have ended up just like my parents. Dead. He was the one that saved me. Now I am adopted by his parents - Sophia and Maximus - and Eric is my adoptive brother. How could I leave him?
I ran out the mall doors and tired to look for Eric. I saw him. He was walking down the street, a few meters away from me. I ran to Eric. I could feel the wind blow in my face.
“ERIC!” I called out. “Eric stop!”
Eric stopped and looked back at me. “What? What do you want from me Rose?”
“Eric… I want to talk to you.”
“About what? About Annabelle, right?”
“Yeah.”
“No! I don’t want to talk about Annabelle.”
“Eric, why are you doing this?”
“Rose… you have to understand me. If I leave, it’ll be better for everyone. So Rose… just let me go!”
“I can’t Eric… I just can’t” I say as I see a black Mercedes pull up to us. It was our parents.
“Eric! Are you crazy? Sadie just called us, she told us what happened.” Sophia said.
Both our parents stepped out the car. Sophia walked to Eric and puts a hand on his shoulder.
“Eric, listen to me. You can’t just run away from us like this. Annabelle loves you but maybe not enough for you to be her… you know… boyfriend.”
Eric turned his head. I could read his mind. He was shocked that his parents knew about him and Annabelle.
“Eric, if you leave, think of how much you’ll hurt all of us. Think of how much you’ll hurt Sadie. Think of how you’ll hurt Alex. Think about how much you’ll hurt… Annabelle.”
Eric looked shocked. “I’m sorry. I never even stopped to think of others. I guess I only thought of myself.”
Just as he said this, Alex, Sadie and Annabelle came running to us.
“Eric!” Sadie said, as she held her arms to hug Eric. Eric held his arms out to hug her back.
“Eric… I’m so sorry.” Annabelle said. “I never really… noticed… I’m sorry.” She held her arms out too and Eric also hugged her back.
“It’s okay.” Eric says back.
After that, we all went in our car and drove back home. “That was the best mall trip ever!” Annabelle said sarcastically. “I bought so much clothing!”
Eric just chuckled when she said this. It was a pretty quiet drive to our house. When we got there, Annabelle, Sadie, Alex went to their houses.
There was a week until school started. The week went by pretty fast. I never really did anything. Hardly went outside and hardly saw anyone. Well, expect for Annabelle. She came over almost everyday.
It was September 7th when school started. Sadie, Alex, Annabelle, Eric and I, all were going to the same school, Lightwood Secondary School. Eric decided to drive us to school in his brand new, black Lamborghini 2011. That he just bought, with is own money. He wanted to try it out. But, it seemed that he wanted to show off his car. Typical Eric. Trying to get lots of attention. It’s not like it’s hard for people to notice Eric. Eric was hot; well not to me, but to other girls.
I had already gotten my schedule two days ago. Since I was late, picking my classes, the school choose them for me. Half of my classes were the ones I hated.
When we got to school, we all split up to find our classes. I had Physics for first period, so I headed to room 114, with the help of my school map. I hated the first day of school. I was always late for class.
When I got to class, I noticed I was the last to enter. All the eyes, of my classmates, shot me a look, as I walk to my seat.
I hated the first day of school. The teachers always gave boring lectures about classroom behaviors. I mean, how many times do we have to listen to the same lectures a day?
After Physics class, I had Chemistry. I was late again. When I got to class, there was only one seat available. Without looking up at all, I walked to an empty seat and figured it must be mine. I knew that all eyes were on me. It was bad enough reading their minds; I didn’t have to look at them too.
As I took my seat, if felt a tap on my shoulder. When I looked up, saw someone familiar. Deep, dark brown eyes; jet black hair; about 6 foot tall; well built; handsome. He was wearing a dark blue long-sleeved shirt, with jeans. His hair was sort of spiked up in the front and smoothly combed in the back.
I knew this person. Where had I seen him?
“Hey Rose! Remember me?!” he whispered to me.
His voice. It was so familiar. “Hey Spence!” I said almost too loud. I looked up to see the teacher, but he didn’t notice, he was too busy walking something on the board. I looked back at Spencer. I looked at him. He looked like the athletic type of guy. He was well built, broad shoulders; strong. Just like Eric.
“How’s it going?” I said.
“Great!”
“I could hear the teacher going on and on with his stupid lecture. The good thing about being able to read minds was that you could know if the teacher notices if you are talking or not.
“Hey, Spence… can I ask you something?”
“Sure. What’s up?”
“What happened between you and Lora?” I could see his expression change. I was still curious. It was so hard not to be able to read someone’s mind, other than Annabelle.
“I already told you. Nothing happened. Why do you care so much?” He said. He just didn’t understand. He is human. Humans were so stupid. They never look beyond their world. They don’t understand our ways of thinking. It felt so annoying not to be able to read someone’s mind.
Spencer looked up to the clock. He noticed there was only 10 minutes left.
“Look, Rose,” he said pulling out a sheet of paper. “I’m not trying to be rude or anything, but I just don’t want anyone to know about this. Especially someone I hardly know.” He looked unfolded the piece of paper in his hand. “Look. Here’s my schedule. Let’s see if we have any other classes together.”
I opened my bag. My mind couldn’t let go of the words Spencer had just said to me. I don’t want anyone to know about his. Especially someone I hardly know. I mean, how he could tell me this. I reached out my hand which held my folded schedule, to him. As he took it from me, our fingers lightly touched causing my heart skip a beat. I felt my cheeks being to burn. I knew I was blushing. I was the worst at keeping my motions hidden away from others. My facial expressions always gave them away.
Spencer unfolded my schedule, as he compared his to mine. I could see his face brighten.
“Oh look!” he said turning the schedules so that I could see. “We have Physical Education together. Oh, look and Bio!”
“What a coincidence,” is ay. It was such a surprise to me. I never had friends in the same class. I have such bad luck. The bell rang. I had English next. Spence handed back my schedule.
“See you later,” he said as a group of his friend surrounded him.
“You too!”
As I walked out the class, all that was on my mind was my conversation with Spencer. What did he mean he hardly knew me? Did I mean that little to him? His words. His voice. I just couldn’t get them out of head. I just couldn’t take it anymore. I couldn’t take the fact that I was never accepted. No one cared for me. Not even Spencer. Spencer. The only one I thought would be perfect had thought of me like I was a normal everyday person. I had to accept the fact that Spencer was only a friend. And nothing but a friend, I decided as I rushed out the door in the direction of room 237 - my English room.
